Frequently Asked Questions
If you can't find the answer to your question here please get in contact so I can answer your query personally.
What is Sexology?
Sexology is the multi-disciplinary study of human sexual behaviour. This includes (but is not limited to) sexual interests, function, development, intercourse and relationships. Clinical Sexologists have studied these areas of sexuality from a biopsychosocial perspective; meaning we hold understanding around the biological, psychological, and social components of sexuality.
We apply this learning to support clients who are needing help with a whole host of presentations; including sexual function problems, gender or sexuality questioning, relationship issues, and compulsive sexual behaviours to name just a few.
Do I have to be in the LGBTQIA+ community to have sessions with you?
Not at all! While my practice has been made primarily to cater to those in these communities (or perhaps questioning if they are), I am happy to see clients from all walks of life.
I feel like the problem I have is really embarrassing, do I have to tell you everything before starting therapy?
Many people feel nervous about starting therapy - especially sex therapy! I talk about these themes all day, every day, but can appreciate that for many this is a very difficult subject. Rest assured, you will never have to talk about anything you are not ready to share. It's also highly unlikely you will be the first person struggling with what brings you to therapy. I can offer you a safe, non-judgemental place to discuss your concern.
Why the 'Queer' Sexologist?
The word 'Queer' is one that holds incredible weight, significance, and for some; pain. This word has been used as a slur towards members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and for many of us it remains a term we are not comfortable using to describe ourselves. Like many other members of the community, I have reclaimed this word as an act of empowerment. However, this is a personal choice. Please know, I will not refer to you with this term unless you express explicit comfort with it.
Are you sex-worker friendly?
Yes. My practice is sex-worker friendly, you are very welcome in this space!
Can I really bring the whole polycule to a session?
I have no set rule about how many individuals attend polycule/family therapy sessions. I assess this on a case by case basis, depending on the need of the individuals involved. If I am unable to work with your group as it is too large, this will be because I feel it will impact the quality of the therapy, and ability for each individual to be heard. In these circumstances, we can discuss alternative constellations for therapy to take place.
The Boring Stuff (Policies/Procedures)
Therapeutic Contracts are an essential component of good practice, and will be shared with you for signing before commencing any sessions.
I hold the relevant professional indemnity insurance to carry out my role as a Clinical Sexologist and Integrative Counsellor.
